Reports To: Program Director of the OTO program, MPAS program and course instructor of record as applicable.
Position Summary
The Cadaver Lab Instructor is responsible for providing instruction in gross anatomy through cadaver specimens and facilitating a comprehensive learning experience for students in the Occupational Therapy Doctorate and the Master of Physician Assistant Studies programs. The instructor will guide students in understanding human anatomy, ensure proper handling of cadaveric specimens, and maintain a safe and respectful lab environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Instruction and Facilitation
Lead gross anatomy lab sessions for students, utilizing cadaveric specimens to demonstrate anatomical structures, functions, and clinical relevance as appropriate.
Guide students in proper use of lab tools and models, and identification of anatomical structures.
Support student learning by answering questions, providing clarification, and reinforcing key concepts related to anatomy and clinical application.
Assist in the preparation of educational materials, including lab manuals, quizzes, and instructional guides.
Management of Teacher’s Assistants for open labs.
2. Cadaver Lab Management
Ensure the proper handling, storage, and respectful treatment of cadaveric specimens in accordance with institutional policies and ethical standards.
Oversee the preparation and setup of cadaver specimens for lab sessions
Collaborate with faculty and lab staff to ensure that the lab is equipped with the necessary tools, materials, and resources for instruction.
Enforce lab safety protocols and ensure compliance with regulations related to biohazard disposal and the handling of human tissue.
3. Collaboration and Curriculum Support
Work closely with faculty and program directors to align lab activities with course objectives and overall curriculum.
Assist in the development and continuous improvement of the cadaver lab curriculum, ensuring it meets educational standards
Participate in course-level meetings and contribute to discussions on student performance, and instructional strategies
4. Lab Maintenance and Safety
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, adhering to institutional safety protocols, including those related to biological hazards.
Monitor and maintain the condition of cadaver specimens, ensuring proper preservation and documentation.
Conduct routine checks on equipment, tools, cadaver specimens and models ensuring• their functionality and availability for lab sessions.
5. Student Support and Evaluation
Provide constructive feedback and assessment to students based on their performance in the lab, including anatomical knowledge, and professional behavior as appropriate
Offer additional support to students as needed, including tutoring, review sessions, and office hours (as appropriate), to promote a deeper understanding of human anatomy.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree {preferred) or higher in Anatomy, Biomedical Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or a related field.
- Experience: Previous experience teaching anatomy or working in a cadaver lab setting preferred; hands-on experience with cadaver dissections required.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of human anatomy, with the ability to clearly explain anatomical structures and their clinical significance.
- Excellent communication and instructional skills to guide students with varying levels of
- Familiarity with lab safety protocols and biohazard
- Ability to maintain a respectful and ethical approach to working with human cadaveric
Working Conditions
- The position requires working in a laboratory setting where cadaveric specimens are handled. Personal protective equipment {PPE) must be worn during lab sessions, and all safety regulations must be followed.
- The instructor will interact with students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative educational environment, contributing to the success of anatomy courses and the overall curriculum.
