Full Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director and Medical Director. Assumes responsibility of patient care under the direction of a physician. Follows established standards, procedures, and practices and gives specific patient care directions to medical assistant staff.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides diagnostic assessment services and secures a health history from the patient. Is able to record said findings and critically evaluate for use during an in-depth physical examination of the patient. Able to use assessment techniques including observation, inspection, auscultation, percussion and palpation as an asset to the physician.
- Arranges consultations and referrals and initiates requests for consultations or referrals. Responds to requests from patients, physicians, or the registered nurse/medical assistant staff. Examines the patient and records and discriminates between normal/abnormal findings to recognize the early stages of serious physical problems and determine when to refer the patient to a physician for evaluation or directions.
- Ability to requisition x-rays and labs upon completion of an in-depth examination to further aid the physician.
- Ability to suture, assess and treat burns.
- Ability to successfully administer joint injection under the direction of a physician.
- Able to apply/remove bracing, splints and casts as needed.
- Instructs patients and answers questions.
- Communicates injury care given and treatment plan to designated employer representative (DER).
- Complies with the established hospital protocol. Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Interprets these to physicians, patients and the public as is appropriate.
- Assists with the care and maintenance of unit equipment, supplies and work areas. Requisitions supplies and equipment as needed for patient care. Requests maintenance and repair of malfunctioning equipment. Disposes of defective supplies.
- Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintains good employee relations, interdepartmental relations and public relations. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information and abides by the established communications code.
- Attends required meetings, in-services and educational programs.
- Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops and professional affiliations.
- Conforms to the established Standards of Behavior.
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois.
- Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree Program from an accredited Physician Assistant School.
- Current CPR certification.
- Professional competencies documented by references based on Physician Assistant experience, education or both.
- The analytical ability necessary to assess a patient’s condition and utilize the professional judgment in providing comprehensive care to patients.
- The interpersonal skills necessary to constantly interact with patients, families, medical personnel and other members of health care team.
- The ability to perform effectively and efficiently under the pressure of stressful or emergency situations.
- Emergency Medicine background preferred
