Job Title: Physician Assistant

Job Summary: Under the general supervision of a physician, the Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner uses specialized knowledge in nursing along with skills obtained through experience and/or formal training to provide general medical care and treatment to patients under multiple disciplines. Performs physical examinations, orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests, records physical findings and formulates diagnoses. Prescribes or recommends medications or other forms of treatment according to patient’s health care needs. Collaborates with program supervisor and administration to ensure goals are achieved and program requirements are met while achieving and maintaining the highest quality of care and service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Obtain comprehensive health history, conduct physical exams, and assess overall client health in order to determine health care needs
- Conduct Rapid Assessment for Adolescent Preventive Services (RAAPS) and counsel clients based on information and results obtained
- Document and maintain findings and medical information in a systematic, accurate and succinct format in compliance with program and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations
- Obtain various specimens, perform laboratory tests and interpret results and order additional testing, as needed
- Review overall findings and interpret subject and objective data in order to develop an individualized plan of care including client focused interventions as well as prevention plans for high risk clients
- Collaborate with other members of the program health care team, as needed
- Consult with Physicians, Advanced Practice Clinicians, or Medical Director in order to discuss findings and appropriate treatment for clients, as needed
- Refer clients to appropriate resources and follow up on referrals to ensure that prescribed treatment is obtained
- Advocate for clients, as needed
- Screen and identify clients who meet criteria for enrollment into the Children’s Special Health Care Services program (CSHCS) and work with client and various entities to ensure enrollment
- Monitor, maintain and document all services in compliance with the agency’s quality assurance plan, program and professional standards and accreditation requirement
- Report on program progress at required intervals per funding guidelines
- Provide education and counseling to clients and the community regarding optimal health care
- Maintain currency in nursing skills and techniques as well as knowledge of domestic violence recognition and treatment plans
- Follow the funding sources requirements and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) standards applicable to the services provided
- May assign prescription medication to patients as needed based on licensing
- May conduct HIV testing and counseling, as needed
- May oversee the Chronic Disease Prevention Programs
- Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Concepts, principles and practices of medicine and the human internal organ systems
- Concepts, principles and practices of domestic violence education, prevention and treatment
- Prescription drug medications and drug interactions
- Proper medical documentation and charting techniques
- Proper techniques in obtaining current patient vital statistics (height, weight, accurate blood pressure, temperature, etc.) and patient health history
- OSHA, HIPPA, and confidentiality standards
Skill in:
- Using medical equipment (EKG, PFT, etc.)
- Performing UA, HCG test, STD screening, school physicals, immunizations and other general medical exams
- Strong customer service
- Strong multi-tasking
- Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office
Ability to:
- Think critically and effectively solve problems
- Perform mathematical calculations as needed during the course of performing basic job duties (e.g. calculating proper dosages for patient immunizations)
- Organize daily workload, keep assigned providers on time to the extent possible or, to help provider manage changes to their schedule to ensure that all patients receive the highest level of care
- Listen to patients, understand symptoms and make a diagnosis or prescribe additional testing using standard medical equipment and examination techniques
- Assess data reflective of each patient’s status and interprets appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s age-specific requirements
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment
- Handle stressful situations and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization
Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:
- Minimum Degree Required:
- Master’s degree
- Required Disciplines:
- Nursing, Physician Assistant or related field

- At least 2 years of experience working as a Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of one year in a medical office setting and at least one year working with youth or any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training approved by Human Resources
Licenses/Certifications:

- Michigan Nursing License
- Nurse Practitioner Certification
- Physician Assistant License
