DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the attending faculty physician and the transplant program manager, this position is responsible to assist with the management of outpatient kidney transplant patients. This includes independent clinic visits and other nonbillable work such as; lab reviews, medication dosage changes, managing orders, managing immunosuppression, medication refills etc.

The Senior Physician Assistant (PA) will follow standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow through with the care plan. Assess and provide medical care as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The Senior Physician Assistant is expected to practice consistent with Professional Standards of Practice. Collaborate judgment with off-site physician is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, the Senior PA performs operational level duties as described in the UCSD Performance Policy. The major emphasis of this position is direct patient care delivery. Assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodic health problems. Assignments at this level may include responsibility for occasional community teaching programs, participation in program planning and development of patient education information. May perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year of licensed Physician Assistant work experience. APP experience must include Nephrology, Dialysis or Solid Organ Transplant.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.

  • Ability to perform various medical procedures, for diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

  • Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patients care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient, outpatient plans of treatment.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment e.g., tissue perfusion measuring devices.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing house staff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual – English/Spanish.

  • Epic and Phoenix experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.

  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center’s business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $153,259 – $201,889 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $73.40 – $96.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
