Full Job Description

Physician Assistant – Plastic Surgery (Newport Beach, CA)

Hoag is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant to join our Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery team in Newport Beach and Irvine, CA. This position will work with our fellowship trained plastic surgeon as we expand Hoag’s Comprehensive Breast Program. The plastic surgeon performs a comprehensive range of breast reconstructive services including microsurgical flaps, implant-based reconstruction, and oncoplastic techniques. In addition, the practice may offer other services including aesthetic surgery and general reconstruction.

In this role, the Physician Assistant will partner with the surgeon in all office, hospital, and operating room settings, and over time we envision graduated autonomy for patient care. The team is passionate about providing the best possible surgical care to our patients and this role requires a strong work ethic, excellent clinical skills, compassion, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in inpatient rounds and note preparation.
  • First assist on surgical procedures with graduated autonomy. The surgeon will teach advanced skills to the Physician Assistant (regional blocks, various donor site closures, advanced tissue handling techniques, among other things).
  • Perform bedside and post-op procedures such as biopsies, injections, 3D nipple tattooing, tissue expander fills, and drain removal (specific training to be provided for each procedure)
  • Write pre-op, post-op and discharge orders.
  • Provide prescriptions during pre-operative and post-operative visits.
  • Perform patient history and physical examinations for pre-operative and post-operative patients.
  • Review and sign consent forms in preparation for surgery.
  • Review post-operative expectations and care plans with patients in preparation for surgery using guidelines provided by the surgeon.

Position Details & Required Qualifications

  • Position is located in Newport Beach and Irvine, CA.
  • Full-time exempt position, Monday – Friday. Exact daily hours will vary depending on operative and clinic schedules.
  • Prior experience as a surgical physician assistant is strongly preferred. Suturing proficiency is required.

*Due to the highly subspecialized nature of microsurgical cases, post-training surgical experience of at least 1 year is strongly preferred.

*All applicants considering this position should be well versed with suturing, with strong interest in further development of operative skills.
