Full Job Description

Summary

Baylor College of Medicine at Christus Children’s is seeking an advanced practice provider (APP) to join the section of Pediatric Gastroenterology. The APP works under a delineation of clinical privileges and works collaboratively with other members of the health care team, including the attending physicians, resident physicians, and fellow physicians to provide comprehensive patient care in accordance with the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. Practicing under established guidelines and clinical protocols, the APP assumes independent and interdependent responsibilities in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of treatment and procedures. Job duties are performed in a manner that is appropriate for the ages of patients served. The APP is responsible for education, research, consultation, and evaluation of clinical practice at various levels.

Job Duties

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.
  • Function with a high level of independence to help treat patients with a broad range of gastrointestinal and nutritional problems, including motility disorders, aerodigestive disorders and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Work closely with the Section Head and members of the interdisciplinary pediatric gastroenterology team.
  • Act as primary communicator for patient questions and phone calls; assisting with prior authorizations and refills.
  • Identify patient educational needs and leading/coordinating the development of educational materials.
  • Show innovation and leadership in developing, recommending, planning, organizing policies and procedures designed to improve the patient/family experience with regard to minimizing wait times, timely communication with families, clinic flow, and provider-to-provider communication within and outside of clinic, as well as cost-effectiveness of patient care within the program.

Minimum Qualifications

For Physician Assistant:

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
  • Experience Required: Background working with children with chronic illnesses, and knowledge of long-term medications and drug interactions.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

For Nurse Practitioner:

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Experience Required: Background working with children with chronic illnesses, and knowledge of long-term medications and drug interactions.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current APRN license issued by the Texas Board of Nursing. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
