This role focuses on performing health assessments, running diagnostic tests, prescribing medication and creating treatment plans as well as providing health and wellness education to patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Advanced Practice related duties: Under the direction of a physician, provides health care services to patients, ensuring optimal patient care. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. A senior level role that requires advanced knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Typically responsible for: managing projects / processes, working independently with limited supervision, coaching and reviewing the work of lower level professionals, resolving difficult and sometimes complex problems.

I. GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reports to the Senior Physician Assistant and the Division Chief, this position is responsible for the care of patients assigned to the surgical services under the direction of the attending physicians under the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing physician assistant practice. The PA will evaluate and prepare patients for endovascular neurosurgery, assist in endovascular procedures, perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, prepare patients for discharge, communicate with referring doctors and care for patients in the outpatient department. The PA assumes responsibility for critically ill adult and pediatric patients in the absence of the attending physician in accordance with service policies and protocols.

II. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
¨ Obtains a detailed medical history and performs a comprehensive physical examination upon adult and pediatric patients.

¨ Performs preoperative and pre-angiography preparation of adult and pediatric patients and reinforces information presented by the attending physician to the patient and/or family as necessary. Coordinates necessary tests, consultations, and procedures as indicated or requested by the attending physician.

¨ First or second assists on routine and complex adult and pediatric neuro-endovascular procedures as necessary. Positions and preps patients, performs assistance in the neuro-interventional suite as requested, dictates procedure notes and post-procedure orders in accordance with service protocols, accompanies patients to recovery room or intensive care units.

¨ Performs bedside diagnostic and therapeutic invasive procedures on adult and pediatric patients as indicated or directed by the attending surgeon.

¨ Prepares adult and pediatric patients for discharge, including patient and family discharge teaching, continuing care and rehabilitation arrangements, writing discharge prescriptions, and confirming primary care or referring physician follow-up.

¨ Prescribes pre and postoperative medications for adult and pediatric patients in accordance with service policies and/or attending physician’s instructions.

¨ Under the direction of the attending surgeon, executes a wide range of management plans for adult and pediatric patients.

¨ Dictates formal procedure notes, office notes, letters to referring physicians and discharge summaries of adult and pediatric patients for the attending surgeon’s review and signature.

¨ Participates in the education of students and residents assigned to the neurosurgical services.

¨ Maintain collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
¨ This position reports administratively to the Senior Physician Assistant of the Department of Surgery and the Administrative Manager of the Department.

¨ This position reports clinically to the Division Chief of the assigned service.

¨ Works closely with adult and pediatric patients and their families.

¨ Works as a member of the surgical team including attending surgeons, physicians, residents, nurses, and ancillary personnel.

III. JOB REQUIREMENTS:
A. JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

¨ Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as set by the American Heart Association

¨ Possess the ability to care for critically ill adult and pediatric patients with a broad range of medical problems

¨ Possess the maturity, self-confidence, and ability to follow complex patient management plans as directed by the attending surgeon.

¨ Eligible for state and federal controlled substances registration.

¨ Bilingual skills preferred.

B. EDUCATION:
¨ Bachelor’s degree

¨ Graduate of an A.M.A. approved physician assistant program

¨ BLS Certification

C EXPERIENCE:
¨ One or two years Physician Assistant experience.

D. LICENSES, ETC.:
¨ Physicians Assistant must obtain Massachusetts license as a Physician Assistant prior to commencing work.

V. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
¨ Outpatient clinic care area.

¨ Continuous exposure to sick patients and bodily substances.

¨ Work requires frequent lifting of patients.
