Job Overview
The class specification for the position of a Physician’s Assistant/ARNP for the Sheriff’s Office is responsible for providing diagnostic, therapeutic, primary and acute medical care to incarcerated individuals under the guidance of a physician. Responsibilities include conducting physical exams, treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and managing medical emergencies. Physician’s Assistant/ARNP’s operate with high autonomy while strictly adhering to facility security. The omission of specific statements does not preclude management from assigning specific duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position
Responsibilities
· Provides diagnostic and therapeutic medical care.
· Provides primary and acute medical care.
· Provides thorough examination and observation of patients.
· Documents medical histories.
· Conducts physical examinations.
· Orders laboratory studies.
· Identifies wounds, prescribes appropriate treatment, monitors efficacy of treatment.
Requirements
· Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education.
· Advanced Practice Registered Nursing license issued by the Florida Board of Nursing or Physician Assistant license issued by the Florida Board of Medicine.
· Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.
· A Master’s degree in a related health care or health related science and graduation from an accredited physician assistant/ARNP educational program.
· A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant.
· Experience identifying medical problems and determining appropriate action to treat the problem, including referral to a physician or hospital.
· Experience performing specified diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures.
· Experience providing a wide range of emergency services in the absence of a physician including primary care for trauma and life-saving procedures.
· Prompt and regular job attendance is an essential job function.
