The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of surgical specialties. These include bariatric surgery, burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and oncologic surgery. The Department’s extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.

Responsibilities
The role of the Physician Assistant (PA) within the Department of Surgery is to provide independent, advanced level Physician Assistant clinical operations to both Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery patients and their families as well as patients being evaluated for consideration of organ transplantation This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols as defined by standardized procedures. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures, surgical procedures, including the possibility of occasional operative first assist per approved standardized procedures as identified by the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions will be independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. PA’s are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents, and other ancillary staff.
Required Qualifications
  • One year or greater recent clinical experience in specialty care of surgical patients.
  • California Licensed Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Graduation with a master’s degree, or PhD from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • National certification as a Physician Assistant (NCCPA)
  • DEA Certificate within three months of hire
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Judgment skills to effectively meet the needs of patients
  • Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
  • Experience managing disability or peer to peer paperwork for insurance authorization.
  • CITI Certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Valid NPI number.

Special Requirements
  • Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider
  • Must be able to work occasional overtime
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some overnight and weekend shifts as necessary.
  • Able to lift 25 pounds, see well enough to read gauges and identify injuries
  • This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment
