Orthopedic Physician Assistant

Full Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join our vascular and interventional practice’s growing knee and joint pain program. This role is ideal for a provider with strong orthopedic assessment skills who is interested in helping patients access advanced, minimally invasive treatment options for chronic joint pain.

Our practice evaluates and treats patients with chronic knee, hip, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal pain who may be candidates for image-guided, non-surgical procedures such as Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) and Targeted Arterial Micro-Embolization (TAME).

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will perform comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluations, review imaging and prior treatment history, identify appropriate candidates for minimally invasive vascular-based procedures, educate patients on treatment options, and collaborate closely with our physicians and interventional team.

This is not a traditional orthopedic surgery position. The ideal candidate understands orthopedic conditions, conservative care pathways, joint pain evaluation, and patient selection, while being comfortable working in a multidisciplinary vascular/interventional environment.

About the Practice

We are a vascular and interventional practice focused on helping patients improve mobility, function, and quality of life through advanced minimally invasive treatments. In addition to vascular care, our practice treats patients with chronic joint pain using innovative image-guided procedures designed to reduce pain and inflammation without traditional surgery.

Our knee and joint pain program focuses on patients who may not be ready for surgery, may not be surgical candidates, or are seeking non-surgical alternatives for chronic pain and decreased mobility.

Patient Population

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will evaluate and manage patients with conditions including, but not limited to:

· Chronic knee pain

· Knee osteoarthritis

· Persistent knee pain despite conservative treatment

· Patients considering or trying to delay total knee replacement

· Patients who are not ideal surgical candidates

· Hip pain

· Shoulder pain

· Chronic joint inflammation

· Tendinopathy-related pain

· Sports-related or overuse joint pain

· Patients with limited mobility due to musculoskeletal pain

· Patients who have failed physical therapy, injections, bracing, medications, or other conservative treatments

The PA will help determine whether patients are clinically appropriate for further evaluation by the physician for procedures such as GAE or TAME.

Procedures Supported by the Role

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will support the evaluation, education, care coordination, and follow-up process for patients undergoing or being considered for:

Genicular Artery Embolization

GAE is a minimally invasive procedure used for patients with chronic knee pain, often related to osteoarthritis or inflammatory changes within the knee joint. The PA will help evaluate patients, review clinical history, assess prior conservative treatment, and educate patients on the care pathway.

Targeted Arterial Micro-Embolization

TAME is used for select patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, including hip and shoulder pain, where inflammation and abnormal blood flow may contribute to symptoms. The PA will assist with identifying appropriate candidates, documenting orthopedic findings, and supporting follow-up care.

Additional Musculoskeletal Care Support

Depending on experience and scope of practice, the PA may also assist with or perform:

· Musculoskeletal examinations

· Joint assessment and functional testing

· Review of X-rays, MRIs, and other imaging reports

· Conservative care planning

· Coordination with physical therapy or referring providers

· Patient education before and after procedures

· Follow-up evaluations after GAE or TAME

· Tracking patient outcomes and symptom improvement

Essential ResponsibilitiesOrthopedic Evaluation

· Perform comprehensive orthopedic and musculoskeletal histories and physical examinations

· Evaluate patients with knee, hip, shoulder, and joint pain

· Assess severity, duration, functional limitations, prior treatments, and patient goals

· Review prior orthopedic records, imaging, injections, physical therapy, and medication history

· Identify patients who may be appropriate candidates for GAE, TAME, or other minimally invasive procedures

· Recognize patients who require referral back to orthopedics, rheumatology, pain management, primary care, or another specialty

· Document objective findings, pain scores, functional limitations, and clinical rationale for treatment recommendations

Patient Selection and Care Pathway Support

· Screen patients for clinical appropriateness for minimally invasive joint pain procedures

· Help determine whether patients have failed or exhausted appropriate conservative treatment options

· Educate patients on non-surgical treatment pathways

· Prepare patients for physician consultation and procedural decision-making

· Support shared decision-making between patients and physicians

· Identify red flags or contraindications requiring additional evaluation

Procedure-Related Support

· Conduct pre-procedure visits and clinical assessments

· Explain what patients can expect before, during, and after GAE or TAME

· Support informed patient education regarding risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected recovery

· Coordinate care with the interventional team

· Conduct post-procedure follow-up visits

· Monitor pain relief, mobility improvement, functional outcomes, and patient satisfaction

· Escalate clinical concerns to the physician as appropriate

Documentation and Compliance

· Complete accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record

· Document medical necessity, conservative treatment history, functional impairment, and clinical findings

· Support appropriate coding, billing, and authorization documentation

· Assist with prior authorization requirements when needed

· Maintain compliance with practice policies, state regulations, and payer requirements

Collaboration

· Work closely with vascular/interventional physicians, advanced practice providers, clinical staff, imaging teams, and administrative staff

· Communicate effectively with referring orthopedic providers, primary care physicians, physical therapists, and other care partners

· Participate in case reviews and program development for the knee and joint pain service line

· Support a coordinated, patient-centered care experience

Patient Experience

· Provide compassionate, clear, and thorough patient education

· Help patients understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and realistic expectations

· Build trust with patients who may feel frustrated after failed conservative care

· Reinforce the practice’s commitment to excellent patient experience, access, communication, and follow-through

Required Qualifications

· Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

· Current PA-C certification

· Active state Physician Assistant license or eligibility for licensure

· DEA registration or ability to obtain

· BLS certification

· Minimum of 2–3 years of orthopedic, sports medicine, musculoskeletal, pain management, or related clinical experience

· Strong orthopedic examination skills

· Experience evaluating patients with knee, hip, shoulder, or chronic joint pain

Preferred Qualifications

· 5+ years of orthopedic or musculoskeletal experience

· Experience in outpatient orthopedics, sports medicine, joint preservation, pain management, or interventional musculoskeletal care

· Strong knowledge of knee osteoarthritis and conservative treatment pathways

· Experience reviewing orthopedic imaging and reports

· Experience with joint injections or musculoskeletal procedures

· Experience working with patients considering alternatives to joint replacement

· Familiarity with minimally invasive procedures, interventional radiology, vascular medicine, or embolization-based therapies

· Experience with eClinicalWorks or similar EMR system

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is clinically strong, patient-centered, and comfortable practicing in a non-traditional orthopedic environment. This provider should be able to evaluate joint pain patients thoughtfully, determine whether symptoms and treatment history align with our procedural pathways, and communicate clearly with both patients and physicians.

The strongest candidates will have:

Schedule

· Full-time position

· Outpatient clinical setting

· No hospital call unless otherwise specified

· No traditional orthopedic surgery call

· Schedule may include clinic visits, procedure follow-up visits, and care coordination responsibilities
